A variety of fresh influences started to colour the songs she chose and the way she performed them. It was also the first time that she recorded with what she now calls her big sound, the full electric-acoustic band that backs her on tour and in the studio.

The album opens with There's A Train That Leaves Tonight an atmospheric slow burner whose skeletal arrangement leaves her voice plenty of room in which to weave and soar. Declan Sinnott's subtle guitar chops and Carl Geraghty's alto sax add a soulful touch to this moving ballad. State Of Heart, which follows, keeps the tempo in low gear but sees descreet shades of Mary's jazz and pop sensibilities adding colourful touches to the vocal line. Nightime also starts off slowly but the rhythm soon shifts up a notch to reflect the lyric's talk of dancing girls and the light headedness that accompanies carefree falling in love. It's an unashamedly light hearted celebration of romance that majors on fun and leaves profundity taking a rain check.

The Crow On The Cradle adopts a more serious stance and drifts back into a traditional musical vein, its haunting tempo and delicate voice and guitar arrangement almost disguising the song's emotional power. This is the story of Irish emigrants leaving their homeland in search of work in America, knowing that they'll never see Ireland or their loved ones again. On disc this song is heart-stopping, beautiful and disturbing, but live it's positively discomforting. Another singer might easily destroy its integrity and intensity with sentiment but Mary's delivery is steeped in genuine emotion and pain. Once you've heard her sing this song the memory of the performance and the anguish of the tale will never leave you.

The album closes with Going Gone. The simplicity of the arrangements that have preceded this number gives way to some subtle sophistication, with Brian Calnan's percussion becoming increasingly intricate and off beat behind Mary's double-tracked vocals. There are no bloated arrangements or exaggerated vocal mannerisms to deliver an immediate rush. Instead, its emotional content and musical elegance drift slowly into your blood-stream, intoxicating you without making you aware that you're under their influence. That's not saying, of course, that the record lacks vitality or life. The first track clearly shows otherwise. The Circus is one of Noel Brazil's exquisitely lyrical songs rendered with the enthusiasm that reinforces my belief that Mary has a particularly strong affinity with this writer's work. Although it's a classic tale of love gone wrong her performance isn't world-weary or maudlin. It certainly leaves you feeling far happier than the song's abandoned subject.

In A Dream provides both a dynamic and an emotional contrast, allowing Mary to voice sentiments of pure delight while the rhythm section shifts into a higher gear. Another of Noel Brazil's compositions, it shows that this gifted writer handles the lighter side of the human condition with the same dexterity he uses to portray its shadowy side.

In the wrong hands Jimmy McCarthy's Wonder Child could easily become one of those simpering lollipops that makes you want to trash your stereo. Mary's treatment, however, imbues the song with an affection and honesty that renders it touching and poignant. Its rudimentary arrangement contrasts with the more muscular treatment the band gives to Soul Sister in which Mary's voice dances between breathy whispers and the full throated roar of an evangelising soul queen. Carl Geraghty's plaintive tenor sax adds an appropriate authenticating touch to this acetylene fuelled torch song.

John Gorka's All That Hammering starts with a country feel but, unlike many songs of that ilk, it enjoys a lyrical deftness and perception that Mary exploits to the full. Afterwards, if you want proof that fusions of genres can work, Donegal Breeze shows that you can successfully blend elements of contemporary and roots music.

A Stone's Throw From The Soul sees Mary revelling in Noel Brazil's second upbeat contribution. The chemistry really gels here with evocative Iyrics combining with an inspired delivery and a sumptuous arrangement. If Mary was listening to her Walkman before this performance my money says she was plugged in to the Hendrix version of All Along The Watchtower or the Stones' Sympathy For The Devil. The song careers along at drag strip velocity, which ought to assure you that after six albums she still has the energy and enthusiasm that fired her up the day she first started singing.

The bottom line is that, like the albums that preceded it, Circus firmly consolidates Mary Black's position as one of the most talented and exciting performers in contemporary music.

Review by Malcom Steward

Malcolm Steward is an award-winning British hi-fi journalist, music critic and self-professed champion of home-grown musical talent. With its uncomplicated lyrics, melody and arrangement you know that its emotional force comes from the metaphysical magic that links Mary and Noel Brazil. The impromptu whoop of joy after the final chorus tells you she loves singing this number! The Loving Time is another Brazil song, but this time that's darker hued, and more reflective. Nonetheless, Mary's sympathetic, effectual delivery of the lyrics brings out its underlying positive message.

There are two songs called The Holy Ground on this album, the first of which is a modern revoicing of a traditional songs, the second a new Gerry O'Beirne composition. Both show that while Mary has expanded her musical horizons she hasn't lost touch with her roots. Both songs remind you what a pleasure it is to hear Mary's voice with minimal accompaniment. However, John Gorka's Treasure Island, which separates these two songs presents a convincing defence for Declan Sinnott's more adventurous, contemporary arrangements. Then comes the cover of Sandy Denny's One Way Donkey Ride, another song that's effectively unadorned but, as we've come to expect from Mary and the band, no less chilling or potent.

However, my vote for the album's high spot, goes to Dockland. For me, this song, with its electric, relaxed but rocky feel, comes together like no other. You can take it apart, scour its structure with a microscope and still not find one tiny element that isn't perfectly judged - Garvan Gallagher's insistent bass line, Declan Sinnott's tastefull, economic guitar, Carl Geraghty's ethereal sax, Pat Crowley's ever dependable piano, Dave Early's persuasive drumming and Frank Gallagher's carefully measured synth lines. Mary's confident, commanding singing matches the band's dynamic swings blow for blow, creating a wall of sound that's subtle but dauntingly mighty. The four-de-force performance does full justice to Noel Brazil's superbly crafted lyrics.

So has the Mary Black Band finally explored all possible directions now that its fifth album has nearly reached its conclusion? Poison Words, the closing song suggests not. Mary singing accompanied by Declan on acoustic guitar is nothing unusual but the contribution from the Vanbrugh String Quartet is. Their playing adds another fascinating - and entirely congruous - dimension to the song.

If you're looking for a one-word description to sum up this album, "subtle" is a strong contender. The drama and passion of The Holy Ground are often tucked away below its surface, They're not as immediatly apparent as they are in No Frontiers but they're there all the same, tugging your emotional trigger just as effectively.

By Malcolm Steward

Malcolm Steward is an award-winning British hi-fi journalist, music critic and self-professed champion of home-grown musical talent. I wouldn't argue with anyone who said it still was, such is its impact and potency. The way in which the title track's delicate introduction gives way to Garvan Gallagher's positive statements on the bass tells you that for the next forty-two minutes your emotions are going on a thrills and spills roller coaster ride. Then the bombshell hits as Mary and her band drift into another of the live set's high spots, Noel Brazil's spine-tingling Columbus. This was the song that first brought Mary to my notice and I'll admit to a special, abiding affection for it. That doesn't, however, influence my opinion that this song and Mary's performance of it - live or on disc - are anything less than truly stunning. Garvan Gallagher's Clevinger bass line unsettles you physically by regulary plunging through the floor, sounding like a baritone wail from a wounded animal, while Mary's haunting vocal chills your emotions and senses by evoking fears that anyone might harbour. If we're using the roller coaster analogy, this song is the point in the ride where your stomach comes into your mouth. Disconcerting but delicious, dynamic and achingly beautiful, all at the same time.

Jimmy McCarthy's optimistic Another Day steadies you for a moment until you reach Fat Valley Of Pain, another striking, thought-provoking song that showcases Noel Brazil's poetic use of language. Mary's voice, as pure as ever, flirts with Declan's abrupt, choked guitar chords and the sinuous Garvan Gallagher bass line that roots this fragile song firmly to the ground.

I Say A Little Prayer - yeah, the Aretha Franklin number - it this album's audacious cover and - no surprises - Mary handles it as though it had been written solely with her in mind. As she's done before, she takes a classic, leaves its integrity perfectly intact, yet brings to it her own, unique personalising touch. As elsewhere on this album, Declan Sinnott's flawless production allows the song limitless room the breathe.

The album closes in typically powerful style with a plaintive Thom Moore song The Fog In Monterey. The roller coaster ride is over and you're drifting in neutral, exhausted but exhilarated, back to the starting point. Anyone want to go round again?

By Malcom Steward

Malcolm Steward is an award-winning British hi-fi journalist, music critic and self-professed champion of home-grown musical talent. Two Noel Brazil songs follow, Golden Mile and the title track, Babes In The Wood. Without wishing to denigrate the efforts of any of the talented coterie of writers who provide Mary with material, I reckon that a special synergy exists between her and Brazil. His songs, as Mary readily admits, are often extraordinarily challenging to sing, yet rather than approach them with hesitation she seems to find the challenge inspirational - remember Columbus from the previous disc?

The album's fifth track The Thorn Upon The Rose was released as the first single from Babes. Its lyrics are considered and poignant, and Mary's delivery is sublime, her conviction and measured, tender phrasing leaving the listener aching for the next line to unfold.

The effervescent Brand New Star, which follows, acts as a release for the tension created by the song before. An unadulterated celebration of simply living, its optimism is infectious. Use it as I do to kick start yourself into action on days when getting out of bed seems like too much trouble.

Prayer For Love and Adam At The Window maintain the album's sanguine feel - every song so far has had an uplifting character and the feeling it imparts when you listen to reinforce Mary's assertion that she and the band really had a good time recording these songs.

The vinyl release of this album closes with a Noel Brazil composition Might As Well Be A Slave. Again, Mary is in take-no-prisoners mode, driving the lyrics home with no quarter given. The song and performance ensure that the album ends on a really high note. But if you're listening to the compact disc version there are still two songs to go...

... including the "difficult" cover version - Joni Mitchell's sombre The Urge For Going. For five minutes and twenty-two seconds I guarantee that you'll think you've died and gone to heaven. As she's done before on other albums, she makes this song appear as though it were her own, every word coming straight from her heart. Full credit to the band for its sensitive playing and to Declan Sinnott for an arrangement that sets the mood for the song ideally. Cover versions rarely approach the quality and commitment of the original performance - particularly when it was given by the song's writer, in this instance a singer of no small status for whom I have the utmost respect. However, I'm not convinced that's an invariable rule. Dare I say that this version is better than the original? Yeah, no problem.

By Malcolm Steward

Malcolm Steward is an award-winning British hi-fi journalist, music critic and self-professed champion of home-grown musical talent.
